Senior Athletics Review

11 May 22

Ruislip High had thirty seven students attend this year’s Senior Borough Athletics Championships which was held for the first time in two years at Hillingdon Athletics Track On Wednesday 11th May 2022.

Alex L (9W) got Ruislip off to a flying start with gold in the 800m run. Alex paced his first lap well and kept his eye on the leader, but by the start of the second lap, Alex dominated and finished strongly to take the gold in a time of 2 minutes and 17 seconds.

His older brother William L (10C) also competed in the 800m. William also secured gold in a dominating display in which he equalled his personal best of 2 minutes 8 seconds. Will started and finished strong in what was a well executed race plan from the young man.

Ruislip continued to compete and secure wins in the heats throughout the morning to confirm their presence in the afternoon finals. With a bronze going to Joe K (9C) in the 1500m race, and the boys’ and girls’ relay teams confirming their place in the afternoon, the action would not overshadow Sam W’s (9F) performance in the discus. With little training, Sam was able to execute a strong throw of 22.66 metres to secure the gold. This, and also Jeremiah’s (9S) performance in the triple jump, earned him a silver and a special mention to Venkatesh V (9C) who was competing with confidence and style until the rain postponed the high jump.

The afternoon saw a further gold rush from the girls with Anna B (9B) winning the 300m race at 44.26 seconds and also Cassie S (10S), who won the 300m with such dominance, she must have finished with a 50 metre gap, crossing the line at 42.24 seconds. Freddie P (10A) dug in and competed well in a tough 200m final where he earned the bronze medal.

On to the 100m races and Zayn A (9W) continued his dominant display in the earlier heats and romped home to a gold medal with a time of 11.62 seconds. His position as one of the quickest sprinters in the country for his age was justified by his afternoon’s work which continued into the 4x100m Year 9 relay. This team effort had Jeremiah, Venkatesh, Alex and Zayn all putting in strong performances. Having finished 3rd overall in the heats, Zayn powered home in the final stretch to win the gold.

The Year 10 girls put in a special fight and secured the silver medal. Despite having been 4th fastest in the heats, the performances of Abigail, Cassie, Grace and Ava were remarkable. Going into the final stretch, Cassie turned in another powerhouse display to overtake two opponents to secure the gold. The Year 10 boys’ 4 x 100m relay team were already confident, having finished the heats as first quickest, but Mustafa A (10B), Luke F (10F) Jamie D (10F)and Freddie P (10A) and Will L (10C) had their work cut out and each member put in a solid performance that was enough to win the gold.

In the final field events of the day we continued with more success with Davey S (10S) winning the gold in the discus with a throw of 22.95 metres and Luke F (10F) putting in a gold standard triple jump with a jump of 10.24 metres, right after he helped his team secure gold in the relay.

A really enjoyable and proud day from everyone involved at Ruislip High today. Not only were the performances fantastic but the behaviour displayed by all students on the day was a credit to the school.
