The Mathematics Department at Ruislip High School intends to maximise the potential of every student and foster an enthusiasm and appreciation of the subject as a whole.  Our students develop constructive, problem-solving attitudes and build confidence in order to become independent thinkers and learners. We ensure all students develop the knowledge of mathematical principles required for adult life and also strive to provide the necessary foundation for further study of mathematics at A Level and beyond. 

Throughout KS3 and KS4, students follow a five-year scheme of learning.

Key Stage 3

During Key Stage 3 students will be studying topics from these main areas to provide a solid foundation in their mathematical understanding: 

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change
  • Geometry and Measures
  • Probability
  • Statistics
Year 7

Students are given a baseline assessment at the start of Year 7, which enables us to cater for students’ specific learning needs. We extend students’ understanding at Key Stage 2 further, familiarising them with more technical methods and vocabulary.

Year 8 

We link students’ classroom learning with the world around them, helping their understanding and realising the relevance of mathematics.

Year 9

Students are prepared for Key Stage 4 as they consolidate their knowledge and independent learning skills.

Key Stage 4

We offer both the Higher and the Foundation tiers for the Edexcel course.

The course covers a vast range of content from analysing and representing statistics to solving geometric problems using trigonometry. A range of interactive resources are used in the classroom to enrich the students’ learning. 

Students will be examined at the end of Year 11, sitting a non-calculator and two calculator papers. They will be assessed internally throughout the Key Stage to ensure that their progress is monitored and tracked carefully.

Key Stage 5

A-level mathematics comprises three equally weighted modules, with two Pure modules and one applied, covering both Statistics and Mechanics. 

Pure modules focus on algebra, graphs, functions and calculus offering students an excellent challenge in developing their knowledge and skills further. Statistics covers various methods of data analysis and representation and probability. Mechanics examines how to model particles in given situations and is closely linked with Physics.
