Computer Science in Action Study Day - Inspiring Our Future Technologists

On Friday 7 November 2025, our Year 12 and 13 Computer Scientists attended Computer Science in Action, an engaging and thought-provoking study day held at the Emmanuel Centre in central London. Designed specifically for A-level, IB, BTEC Level 3 and T-Level learners, the event brought together leading figures from industry and academia to explore the rapidly evolving world of technology and to inspire the next generation of digital innovators.

Throughout the day, students heard from a range of expert speakers who shared their experiences and insights into some of the most exciting areas of modern computing. Sue Black OBE opened the event with “AI Demystified: Navigating the New Digital Frontier,” helping students understand the opportunities and challenges posed by artificial intelligence in today’s society. Her talk encouraged students to think critically about how AI can be used responsibly and creatively in the future.

Cloud and cybersecurity engineer Caleb Oniwinde followed with “From Zero to Cloud: How Will You Stand Out?”, offering valuable guidance on developing technical skills and building resilience in a competitive industry. Students gained a clearer understanding of the pathways into cloud computing, one of the fastest-growing areas in the tech sector.

Another highlight came from Dr Chris Howe, whose session “Beyond the Eye” demonstrated how computer vision and AI are transforming global sports talent identification. His interactive examples helped students appreciate the real-world applications of programming and data science, particularly in elite performance environments.

Dr Tishtrya Mehta explored the world of natural language processing in her talk “Can We Teach a Computer to Read?”, giving students insight into how machines interpret human language—an area closely linked to search engines, translation tools and AI assistants.

The day concluded with educator and content creator Dan Aldred, who delivered “Hands-On Computer Science: Learning Beyond Theory.” His talk encouraged students to experiment, problem-solve and engage with computing creatively, reinforcing the importance of practical experience alongside academic study.

In addition to the speaker sessions, students also participated in an Exam Success segment, which provided targeted strategies to help them approach upcoming assessments with confidence. This was particularly beneficial as students will begin to prepare for mock examinations later in the year.

Overall, the Computer Science in Action study day proved to be a highly enriching experience. Students returned with a deeper appreciation of how the concepts they learn in the classroom connect to cutting-edge developments in the wider world. Events like this not only broaden students’ subject knowledge but also support them in making informed decisions about their future studies and career ambitions.

Alfie H, C67, said: "I found all the sessions very informative and relevant to my future plans."

Arnav M, C68, said: "I found the exam tips and guidance really useful and practical. I can easily apply them to my revision sessions."

Ms Begum explained: " The sessions were very well organised with an impressive and diverse range of speakers, It was especially great to see so many high achieving women in technology being excellent role models to our students.”

We look forward to offering similar enrichment opportunities throughout the year to further support our students’ academic and personal development.
