A-level English language conference
In November our A-level English Language students enjoyed a full day of all things linguistic at the English Language Conference hosted by the English and Media Centre. Students travelled with Ms Woolcock to Friends House in Euston where they heard talks from prominent linguists and researchers on areas of language study that are relevant to their A-level course.
Helen Sauntson from York St John University spoke on topical issues of language, gender and sexuality; Dr George Bailey asked students to consider how they use online language; and eminent linguist Jenny Cheshire gave a fascinating presentation on the history of Multicultural London English. It really was fantastic to see the students engaging with the language issues being discussed and enthusing about the ways in which they can use the knowledge gained from this conference to inform their own language investigations and linguistic studies. Mia, Year 13, said: ‘This was a really great trip and gave us the opportunity to experience more for our A Level’.
