Gifted and Talented Students

What is meant by gifted and talented?

A gifted student is one who is in the top 5-10% of the student population. (DfES definition). A gifted student is one who ‘has the capacity for or demonstrates high levels of performance in an academic area.

 

A talented student is one who is in the top 5-10% of those with a domain specific ability in a non-academic area:

 

• Physical talent

• Visual / performing abilities

• Mechanical ingenuity

• Outstanding leadership and social awareness

• Creativity

 Some indicators may be

·                     Reads extensively

·                     Is a perfectionist

·                     Masters new skills quickly and easily

·                     Can get frustrated with self

·                     Uses a rich and fluent vocabulary

·                     Sets goals and works towards them

·                     Has a good memory

·                     Asks a lot of questions

·                     Is generally very competitive

·                     Shows originality

·                     Perseveres with tasks

·                     Is observant; notices things that others may not

·                     Enjoys new challenges

·                     Can find more than one way to solve a problem

·                     Able to work without a lot of help

·                     Is highly competent in using computers

·                     Keen to work on strengths and to improve on weaknesses

·                     Enjoys coming up with lots of ideas

·                     Is methodical and well-organised

·                     Has a good sense of humour

·                     Puts a lot of energy into tasks

·                     Enjoys and takes on leadership roles

·                     Can concentrate for long periods

·                     Likes to work with others

·                     Appears to be aware of how he/she learns best

·                     Is confident in expressing own ideas

·                     Learns from own mistakes
